The goals/must have are: -Reliability. -Small dimensions and weight - the Niva has very short bay and gearbox tunnel and is a light car. -At least 110bhp.

Gwolfski • 2 mo. ago Pretty sure the bolt pattern is the same. The gearbox from the niva is the same as fitted to any 1.6 or 1.7 engines (the 1.7 is an overbored 1.6).

July 17, 2023 Niva Andries Nortier built this Lada Niva for Ultra4 Racing. He purchased the project with a Ford V6 but eventually swapped to a 4.0 L Toyota 1UZ-FE V8 making 170 kW (227 hp). That power to all four wheels through Land Cruiser 80-series axles with lockers. The Lada rides on a Radflo coilover suspension with hydraulic bumpstops.

The plan is to use oversize tires, bigger by 2-3 inches and install a 5 speed gearbox. the ratios are the same except for 5th is 0.82, this will increase my top speed by 20 km/h. On the other hand 5 speed gearboxes are hard to find, 3x more expensive and weaker then 4 speeds. Quote.

You get very low torque (one guy I know did 19.97 in the 1/4 mile on a stock lada), they rust really easily because the factory does a really poor job of painting them, and the cars are, in some situations hard to handle..

Other than the factory diesel, there were some custom conversions for Toyota, Nissan, and VW diesels. The either have an adapter to attach to the Lada's 'box or use their own 'boxes adapted to fit on on the Niva's TC. If you can get the bits from a wrecked diesel Niva that would make that swap easier. Just like a big kitset really.

This 2000 Lada Niva (VAZ-2121) has had the 1.6 L or 1.7 L inline-four replaced with a 3.0 L 2JZ-GTE inline-six. The rest of the drivetrain consists of a Supra automatic transmission and Ford 9″ rear end with 3.7 gears.

Engine swaps are much better suited for people who know exactly what they want and have the time, skill and money to get it done. A Lada Niva should be perfectly good for highway driving. Make sure that the standard engine is well serviced and functioning properly. If you don't go much faster than 90km/h it should be smooth and good on fuel.
